iPhone hacker group Evasi0n is feeling some backlash from the jailbreak community after deciding to wait until iOS 7 to release its next jailbreak, bypassing the current iOS 6.1.3 build for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.
The decision to delay until iOS 7, which is rumoured to arrive as early as June, has caused a bit of a rift between the jailbreakers and the community which utilises the group's work.
Following complaints about the decision to wait for iOS 7 one jailbreaker described the dissenters as ‘clueless’ and ‘crybabies’, but subsequently as many as 250 users have signed a petition on change.org to push a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 forward.
Some are accusing the jailbreakers of digging themselves into a hole. Allegedly jailbreak teams have been finding back doors into previous iOS versions only for Apple to make these paths no longer viable in subsequent builds. Teams have met with such resistance for iOS 6.1.3 that with iOS 7’s arrival apparently imminent they’ve decided to wait it out. Perhaps with an unbroken version in the wild Apple will let its guard down on iOS 7?
However, while several reports indicate iOS 7 will arrive in the Summer, with some pointing to WWDC 2013, others think it’ll be a while yet before the new version arrives. There’s some suggestion Apple’s product portfolio has been delayed until the Autumn quarter. If that turns out to be true there are likely going to be plenty of jailbreak users who don’t want to wait that long.
This opens up a lot of questions. Has Apple won the jailbreak war? How long will iOS remain unbreakable now that version 6.1.3 has established a precedent? Will the users who’ve now got a taste for customisation they can’t sate on new builds of iOS jump ship to the range of more open equivalents on Android, Ubuntu, Firefox or BlackBerry 10? Only time will tell.
Our original story:
Apple released iOS 6.1.3, a minor update, almost two weeks ago for its iPhone, iPod, and iPad, effectively killing the current evasi0n jailbreak.
In the wake of iOS 6.1.3, reports claimed that’d be it for jailbreaks for a while. New exploits will be discovered, but wouldn’t be put to use until Apple releases something a little juicier – iOS 7, for instance.
evad3rs’ pod2g confirmed there’d be no jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 last week via Twitter: ‘we are not working on a 6.1.3 jailbreak, that would be too much effort for a minimal update. We’re waiting for a major release.
Apple is expected to debut the next iteration of iOS 7 at WWDC 2013, although nothing has yet been confirmed. The iPhone 5S is expected to get a release date sometime in Q2 2013.
‘It is worth noting, however, that p0sixninja recently announced that he has discovered enough exploits to produce a new jailbreak. And although it’s very unlikely, it’s possible he could release it before Apple unveils the next version of iOS,’ reports idownloadblog.
There are a lot of sites offering jailbreaking solutions for cash. We cannot advocate such services without testing them, so it’s best to wait for the next big evasi0n jailbreak to land some point inside Q2 2013 [AKA the summer].
